Netplay

Firstly, connection to the best server you can find, lowest ping ideally. Re-ping the servers just to see if its fluctuating much, ping will generally increase/decrease every time you do so, so play on the most stable one. Gamespy would be one such recommendation for doing this, also most online gaming services only let you join a game if your ping is sufficiently low enough to be able to play well. Go to www.heat.net, this is where I play Sin online.

You can choose your type of connection in the Sin multiplayer menu, e.g. 33.6K, 56K, etc. If you once more go into your config.cfg file search for "set rate". The default value for this may not be correct for you. Depending on your connection, try changing the value depending on your connection:

You will most likely have to play around to find the right value for you. So do some testing with them.

You can also change this variable during gameplay to suit your needs. If your ping is high you may want to lower your rate. Try add the following to your autoexec.cfg or config.cfg file.

bind HOME "set rate xxxx"

bind KP_PGUP "set rate xxxx"

You can substitute in your own keys & rate values, I use 2500 & 3000. Set one low in case your ping starts to rise, this is a sign you may have set it to high for the current server, try increasing it for better results whenever possible.

There are some other settings which can aid your game as well, if you disable auto-downloading, this can vastly improve your game experience, although you'll have to play on a server that is running the same maps that you have. To do so, search for the following in the config.cfg.

set allow_download_maps

set allow_download_sounds

set allow_download_models

set allow_download_players

set allow_download

Change these values as you please, valid entries are "1" & "0". 0 will disable it, if you want to entirely disable it, change set allow_download to "0".

Another little tweak is to change "set sv_footsteps" to "0". This will disable playing of footsteps in the game, which can contribute to lag in multiplayer.

Also, limiting your maxfps will aid greatly, change the value of line set cl_maxfps to equal 30. The default is 1000, which is far too high.
