Canonical showcases Ubuntu Netbook Remix at Computex
Canonical today officially unveiled a new iteration of Ubuntu Linux at Computex Taipei dubbed Ubuntu Netbook Remix. The OS is touted as a “reworked desktop image of Ubuntu built specifically for a new category of portable internet-centric devices.”
The remix is based on the standard Ubuntu Desktop Edition but is optimized for the Intel Atom processor and has a launcher that “allows users to get on-line more quickly and have faster access to their favorite applications.” Unlike its other consumer and enterprise Linux flavors, Ubuntu Netbook Remix will not be available for download as it will be offered only through a number of unnamed OEMs.
The move was expected and is a logical one for Canonical given the ever growing popularity of low-cost, small form factor “Netbook” computers. However, now that Microsoft is also encouraging PC makers to install its ubiquitous XP on low-cost machines by providing deep discounts, it will certainly be an uphill battle for the Linux vendor.

Post a comment| Nirkon on June 26, 2008 6:04 AM | Well.. the problem is that when comparing ubuntu and XP on UMPCs, microsoft already lost the battle I mean I speak from experience, on the Eee, ubuntu is much faster, more responsive and takes less room than XP.
Offers less loading time, more functionality and user-friendless (except for installing software.. which is very hard, im learning to install stuff myself, since i've never used Linux before). But most of the stuff you need is already there, Firefox, Messenger (pidgin), email (evolution mail) + a bunch of others. but I don't like the fact that I wont be able to download this.
