RAM performance
The
RAM issues with this VIA chipset are well documented &
luckily enough I managed to get some benchmarks done on my old
BX based motherboard before I blew it. The pictures pretty
much speak for themselves. The first picture is that from the
BX based motherboard & the second picture is that of the
VT6X4 at default settings (nothing has changed in either
setup).
As
you can see that’s not very good at all. I then decided to
see what I could do to improve this & after a quick trip
to the BIOS, changing the memory timings & following VIA
Hardware’s guide I came up with these results.
As
you can see, a pretty massive difference it made. So remember
to change your memory timings if possible. Also thanks to the
VIA chipset its possible to run your RAM at bus speed or at
+/-33Mhz for those of you who are overclocking or would like
to run your RAM at 133Mhz on a 100Mhz bus. Unfortunately my
RAM is PC100 & was too unstable to run at 133.
