C&C2: Tiberian Sun review

Sound

The in-game music is another point of excellence, weapon sounds are perfect, as is the noise of explosions & other background noise, ION storms sound intense. However, the responses that units give in acknowledgement are repetitive & will annoy you after a while. You’ll soon get bored of “Death from above” & “Just give me an order”. A great touch is the way battle sounds seem to fade as you scroll away from a battle. Audio is excellent overall.

Gameplay

Gameplay is what matters most about this game & this is where it excels. Play balance is almost perfect, overall though I’d have to say all things equal GDI should win. NOD are fast & stealthy, GDI are slow but powerful. As in the previous games there is a reliance on destroying the other sides harvester to cut of money supply to them. Bridges add a new tactical element to the game though. In the mission I mentioned above that follows destroying the DAM, destroying the 2 bridges effectively cuts off NOD from you, leaving you only to deal with the odd incursion of NOD subterranean APC’s & Devil's Tongue flame tank. You can then pick of NOD with your air units. Engineers can repair bridges though. The enemy AI makes it a priority to repair damaged bridges.

High ground is strategically important now also, it may take some time to adjust but the terrain is really in 3d, high ground offers you longer firing ranges for units.

Other than that gameplay is pretty much the same as the previous 2 games. Some missions requiring a certain amount of stealth, others your build up a base destroy the enemy. Thankfully most missions now have multiple objectives, the time limited missions giving a somewhat cinematic feel to the game, adding to the excitement.

The movies will drive you on to go further into the game & see what the story throws up next.

Gameplay is essentially the same as the previous games. Love them or loathe them you’ll feel the same about this game.

Conclusion

This game has pretty much everything that an RTS should have. Multiplayer is good as well, offering the skirmish mode for those who want to play against AI opponents or those with no net connection, or those with no friends ;)

In some ways it does live up to the hype surrounding the game, although like myself you might feel a little disappointed. Essentially the gameplay is as classic as before & that’s what makes it so good. I’ve played the game non-stop since it arrived. If you liked either of the previous games you’ll no-doubt be addicted to this game.
